Juliette Gordon Low by Stacy A. Cordery5/27/2023 When she went to a doctor for relief, he inadvertently ruptured her eardrum. The “Daisy” nickname? Her family called her “Crazy Daisy,” due to her ebullience, optimism, and predilection for joking and silliness.īut the nickname also came to reflect other troubles Daisy was having a series of ear infections she suffered throughout her youth affected her hearing. I vaguely recalled that she’d been nicknamed “Daisy,” and I had a memory, based on a half-remembered painting, that she was beautiful.īut there was plenty I didn’t know, things (understandably) glossed over in the bio we learned in Girl Scout meetings. I knew that she’d been born to a wealthy family in Savannah, Georgia just before the Civil War, and had a life of privilege. I knew, of course, that in 1912, Juliette Gordon Low had founded the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, inspired and encouraged by her friend Sir Robert Baden-Powell, who had established the Boy Scouts, and the “Girl Guides” program in England. Geez, the things my Girl Scout handbooks never mentioned.

Stevenson5/26/2023 The story features five distinct characters, a lot to flesh out for a first volume. I like how the story showcased each and every character. It did a good job of setting up the right tone all throughout the story. The story’s quirkiness was controlled in a way not for it to become annoying. I believe that what makes the storytelling effective was how the flow of the story was handled. It has this right amount of wit and charm that I, as a reader, felt that it was not overly done. I like how everything becomes so natural. It didn’t have to push itself too far to be funny. Behind all these adventures is a much more bigger mystery that they are still to solve. This volume features how their physical and mental abilites and wits were tested against their adventures fighting three-eyed foxes, yetis and possessed boy scouts in the forest, a dragon-like serpent in the river and moving statues in an underground cave. The book follows the adventures of five girls living in one cabin, the Roanoke cabin, who always seems to find themselves in trouble. The first volume, Beware the Kitten Holy, which collects the first four issues, takes place at a summer camp in the middle of the woods – Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Girls Hardcore Lady-Types. So onto the second graphic novel that I read this year! I read the first volume of Lumberjanes and I must say that this is a gem! □ Orhan pamuk museum of innocence5/26/2023 His hoard will make him famous – and a laughingstock – in Istanbul society. Beauty and the beast robin mckinley5/26/2023 The major appeal for this story is the writing style. It almost felt like two books ideas were slapped together, when they would have served better as two separate stories. While the events that unfolded in her home life with her father and her sisters were interesting, I couldn’t quite enjoy it because I was waiting for the real story. I wanted to read about the castle and whatever mysterious magic goes on there, but this only took up the last little bit of the book. This is the focus of the book, which I had not been expecting at all. The book concentrates on Beauty’s family life prior to moving into the castle to live with the Beast. I wanted to love this book, but it lacked for me in plot. Robin McKinley’s beloved telling illuminates the unusual love story of a most unlikely couple, Beauty and the Beast. Her father protests that he will not let her go, but she answers, “Cannot a Beast be tamed?” When her father comes home with the tale of an enchanted castle in the forest and the terrible promise he had to make to the Beast who lives there, Beauty knows she must go to the castle, a prisoner of her own free will. But what she lacks in looks, she can perhaps make up for in courage. She is thin and awkward it is her two sisters who are the beautiful ones.
